WOOD FINISHING COURSE
DETAILS

INTRODUCTORY WOOD FINISHING

  • A 2 day intensive course for beginners and those wanting to improve their knowledge and technique. It is a practical and theoretical excursion into the world of wood finishing. This will include surface preparation, staining, French Polishing, grain filling, and wax finishing.

  • You will learn to differentiate between a choice of finishing systems and practice their application.

  • Students will make up their own superior materials, such as wood stain, shellac , wax polish, & wax sticks and then be taught how to apply them to a supplied project.

  • Most materials (including the course project) will be supplied within the price, but students will be asked to bring along some basic items.:- Airtight Tupperware container - min. 6" square x 3" high, 2 empty washing up liquid bottles (clean & dry), Pair of Marigold rubber gloves, Pair of safety glasses, Flat bladed wallpaper/paint scraper, apron or other protective clothing - Course aprons are available to buy for £12.50

  • Course notes will be provided.

No longer will you be limited to a big brush and a tin of varnish, as you are made aware of the different effects you can achieve by selecting different finishing systems.

  • Whatever it is that you want to "finish" after the course, be it furniture (new or old), DIY projects, or hobby items, you will be able to take your new skills and knowledge and apply them to your own items.

INTERMEDIATE WOOD FINISHING

  • A 2 day course for students who have previously attended the Introductory Wood Finishing Course.

  • I would strongly recommend students attending this course immediately after taking the Introductory course. This will cement in your mind the information and skills that you have already learnt. If that is not possible, then book onto later dates.

  • Having already learned a lot about wood finishing theory, and honed your skills, this is your opportunity to refinish your own pieces of furniture. The suitability of all pieces will be discussed prior to the course.

  • With expert help and advice on hand, you will devise and apply finishing systems to suit the items that you have brought along. As well as practicing finishing techniques already visited on the Introductory course, new finishing areas could be explored, such as oil finishing, heat resistant finishes, high wax finishes, etc.

  • Depending on their complexity, students will normally be working on 1 or 2 items and will also be learning from other peoples` projects.

  • All materials will be available on site and will be charged at cost. Students will be asked to bring along some basic equipment.

  • All projects for the Intermediate weekend will be discussed & agreed prior to the course.

All courses will be held at my Kirby Bedon workshop, which is 3 miles south of Norwich, Norfolk, England. Directions will be sent with the final invoice.
