TOOL TUNING AND SHARPENING COURSE DETAILS

  • This is a 5 day course suitable for complete beginners as well as those people who have tried  to achieve good quality results and have been disappointed. There are many aspects that contribute to good cabinet making, but one universal truth is that if you don`t use the right tools prepared to their optimum efficiency you are creating an uphill battle for yourself. This course will start you off on the front foot and you will then have the right tools in the right condition for the job.

  • Prior to the course you will be supplied with a tool list that you will need to have for the course. Some of these items you may already have. Others you will need to buy yourself or tools can  be bought from the tutor. Having these tools will then mean that you are equipped for  "follow on"  Cabinet Making courses.

  • On the course you will be tuning and sharpening all of your tools - this will include honing plane castings; flattening bench stones; sharpening chisels, planes & cabinet scrapers; making & using a strop.

  • You will learn the names and uses for your tools.  You will be shown the different choices that you have regarding sharpening systems and equipment. The majority of the course is hands on as you bring your tools up to scratch.

  •  You will then be taught some basic woodworking skills, including planing technique, face side/face edge, and marking & cutting to fine tolerances.

  • To practice these techniques you will be making useful hand made tools -   A Shooting Board for planing,  and a Bench Hook for sawing.

  • Comprehensive course notes will be supplied.
